Keynote Speakers

 

 

Cr Mike Berwick – Mayor of Douglas Shire Council
Mike Berwick commenced as the Mayor of Douglas Shire Council in 1991.  He is currently Chair of the FNQ NRM Board and a Queensland representative to the National Sea Change Task Force and the National NRM Working Group.

Cr Berwick has previously been a member of the Tropical Landscape Joint Venture (2006), the Australian Coastal Society (2006), the Commonwealth’s Sugar Industry Guidance Group (2003-2004), the Ministerial Advisory Committee for Vegetation Management (2001-2004) and a member of the Board of the Co-operative Research Centre for Coastal Zone Management (2000-2004).  Cr Berwick served as Chair of the National NRM Working Group (2006), Chair of the Australian Tropical Forest Institute (2003-2004), Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Rainforest CRC (2002-2003), and Chairman of the North Queensland Afforestation Association made up of the 10 Far North Queensland wet tropics councils (1992-2003).

 

 

 

 

Mr Tony Roberts – Executive Director, Planning Division Environmental Protection Agency
Tony commenced as the Executive Director of the Planning Division of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in August 2006. Tony joined the EPA from the Department of Premier and Cabinet where he occupied the positions of Executive Director, Environment & Resource Policy and Executive Director, Implementation.  Tony previously spent three years at the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries as General Manager, Policy - a position held since 2002.  From 1999 to 2002, he held senior positions in the EPA Policy Division.  For 10 years prior to the EPA, Tony held Senior Executive and policy positions in the Department of Premier and Cabinet.  Tony has also worked as a strategic planner in local Governments (Maroochy, Tweed and Hornsby Shires) for a total of 9 years.

 

 

 

 

Prof Bruce G Thom BA (Hons), PhD, FIAG, FTSE
Formerly Vice-Chancellor University of New England (1994-1996), Professor Thom has held positions such as Foundation Professor of Geography, Royal Military College, Duntroon (University of New South Wales, 1977-1984); Professor of Geography University of Sydney (1985-1993); and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Research, University of Sydney (1990-1993). He holds the title of Emeritus Professor from University of Sydney.  Professor Thom served as Chair of the Australian State of Environment Committee 1998-2002, and as Chair of the Coastal Council of New South Wales (1999-2004).  He is Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Built Environment at the University of NSW. He served as the Visiting Professor for Coastal Management and Planning at the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources in Sydney. He also formerly held the position of Visiting Professor in the NSW Department of Planning. Professor Thom is a member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists.
